WOMENSPHERE COCKTAIL INVENTION CONTEST
The Inaugural Womensphere Cocktail Invention Contest invites women in science and engineering to use scientific and/or engineering skills, together with creativity, to concoct and invent the inaugural family of Womensphere cocktails.
Womensphere is excited to partner with the Columbia Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE), the Columbia Graduate Women in Science (WISC), and Columbia Bartending Society, to conduct this inaugural cocktail invention competition. (While these organizations are our wonderful implementation partners, the contest is open to graduate students outside of Columbia University.)
We invite women currently enrolled in graduate programs in science or engineering across the New York Tri-State area to join the contest individually or in teams (together with your friends), and invent Womensphere cocktails, experimenting across several categories (based on the liquor/alcohol base) listed below.
These are the cocktail bases we encourage you to experiment with for the Womensphere Cocktail Invention Contest:
We will be offering several workshops to entrants and participants:
Neuroscience & Cocktails workshop
Biology, Chemistry & Cocktails workshop
Mixology session and workshop taught by a leading bartender in New York City
Mixology session and workshop taught by a leading liquor expert
Official entries will be comprised of the following:
The names and affiliations of the entrants, including verification of team leader’s enrollment in a graduate program in science/engineering in New York Tri-State.
The unique recipe to create the cocktail (all recipes must be original), including confirmation of the uniqueness of the cocktail (Originality is very important: recipes copied from published sources will be automatically disqualified).
A description of the science/applied science, and creative design, behind the recipe and design of the cocktail.
WHO CAN COMPETE
The Inaugural Womensphere Cocktail Invention Contest is primarily a competition for women currently enrolled in graduate programs/post-doc programs in science/engineering in the New York Tri-State Area (e.g. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) - and to men/women who are their friends - provided a graduate woman in science/engineering is leading the team.
Entrants can join and compete as an individual, or as a team of two or three.
Tn the spirit of celebrating women's leadership - all teams must be women-led... :-)
JUDGING (Preliminaries and Semi-Final Rounds)
Everyone attending a Cocktail Invention Preliminaries and Semi-Final Round must be at least 21, and is eligible to Judge. The audience/participants vote for the winning cocktail in the Womensphere Cocktail Invention Preliminaries and Semi-Final Rounds.
Participants must register to join and judge the Womensphere Cocktail Invention Preliminaries and Semi-Final Rounds.
Each registered participant gets a ticket.
The participant uses the ticket to cast the vote.
Winning is based on popular vote.
The top voted cocktail in a Preliminaries proceeds towards Semi-Finals, and the top voted cocktails in the Semi-Final Rounds proceed towards the Final Rounds.
JUDGING (Final Rounds)
The Final Round is adjudicated by both a Distinguished Panel of Jurists, and by the audience.
The Jurists’ and Audience’s votes will each determine 50% of the total vote behind a cocktail entry.
REWARDS FOR JOINING THE CONTEST
Recognition awaits the Winners of the Inaugural Womensphere Cocktail Invention Contest. Prizes include: Free dinner for two (or three) at one of our partner restaurants in New York City, shopping discounts and special gifts from our partner retailers, and more goodies that will be announced.
